Biomass-fired water boiler in Uniejów
Name:
Biomass-fired water boiler in Uniejów
Location (settlement, country):
Uniejów, Łódzkie voivodeship, Poland
Brief description of the technology:
Since 2006 a biomass boiler plant has been working in Uniejów, which is responsible for reheating the water extracted from geothermal sources. The biomass-fired water boiler in Uniejów is the first boiler using biomass for home heating in Poland. The Biomass boiler replaced an oil boiler. Currently, the temperature of the extracted water reaches 70 degrees Celsius, and during the distance to the surface it falls even more. With outside temperatures of about -5oC in winter, the extracted water must be re-heated. Thanks to the boiler, it is possible to heat the water in an economical and environmentally friendly way.
Why is it a „Best practice”?
The heating plant in Uniejów is an example of good practices, because it shows the possibility of combined use of local renewable energy resources. It shows a number of benefits that come from from the construction and operation of such a facility. These include economic, social and environmental benefits. Heat for houses in Uniejów is produced from two renewable energy sources: geothermal and waste wood. The hot springs in Uniejów are very rich. They have been used for district heating purposes since five years. The water in this hot springs has a temperature of 70oC, which is enough to warm the house when the outside temperatures is above 0oC. When the temperature in colder than minus 5oC, the thermal water must be additionally heated. The heating plant in Uniejów used conventional fuel such as natural gas or fuel oil for this purpose. Since 2006 a new biomass boiler based on waste wood is used.
