District Heating Plant in Lubań (PEC Lubań)
Name:
District Heating Plant in Lubań (PEC Lubań)
Location (settlement, country):
Lubań, dolnośląskie voivodeship, Poland
Brief description of the technology:
The assessment of straw resources in the range of 20 km from the city of Lubań showed that significant amount of this material is not utilized at its place of origin, and it is left as a waste product in agriculture, especially in large farms specialized in cereal crops. The production of surplus straw is a permanent phenomenon. The estimated amount of available straw is from 10.000 to 12.000 tonnes per year. This quantity is sufficient to satisfy 50% of the district heating requirements of the city of Lubań.
Why is it a „Best practice”?
The use of straw as a fuel for heat generation is increasingly seen as an alternative for local communities. It allows for the consumption of surplus straw, which is treated as agricultural waste, and simultaneously it allows reducing GHGs emissions produced during the combustion of traditional fuels. The use of straw for energy allows to reduce the cost of heat for the local society, and increases energy security in the region through the use of locally available fuel.
