Brief description of the technology:
The municipal boiler house in Sępólno Krajeńskie includes 3 boilers with a capacity of 4 MW, 2.5 MW and 2 MW. Each boiler is equipped with a line of feed-in equipment with belt and screw conveyors, which transports straw from the warehouse directly to each boiler. Directly after harvesting, straw is stored in the above mentioned warehouse with a capacity of 600-700 tons, and in straw stacks with a capacity of 4500 tons. The humidity of straw should be lower than 20%. Before entering the boiler the straw is ground. The boiler house produces 44000 GJ of heat energy annually. The ash formed by combustion is used for agricultural purposes.
Why is it a „Best practice”:
The town heating plant in Sępólno Krajeńskie uses 100 % renewable energy sources – straw – for heating purposes. It heats public buildings such as schools, kindergartens, municipal offices, Sports and Recreation Centre, blocks of flats and buildings of private companies. Residues in the form of ash are used for agricultural purposes. Heating plant suppliers are local farmers for whom the selling of straw is an additional source of income.
