Name:

Location (settlement, country):
ul. Jagodna 1C, 12-200 Pisz, POLAND
Brief description of the technology:
PEC company is located in North Poland in Pisz town located in the middle of Pisz’s Forest (Warmińsko-mazurskie voivodship). The Pisz Forest consists of a unique combination of
coniferous trees, lakes and rivers. Its total area is approximately 100,000 hectares. Within its borders there are a number of lakes designated as nature reserves. The town is known from
its forest industry (since the 19th century) and tourism. Its population is about 20,000.
The PEC Pisz tasks are the delivery of heat, hot water, and air for air conditioning. The company produces heat and hot water in three 6 MW boilers and one 3 MW boiler all produced by Polytechnik with a gross efficiency of 84.7%. Heat and hot water are delivered to 165 individual and 14 group substations by pipelines being almost 15 km long. The annual average heat and hot water sale amounts to 181,800 GJ.
The heating plant replaced old coal fired boilers and many local coal heating plants. It is very important that part of the fuel utilised at the beginning of the operation was waste wood from Pisz and Borecka forests (approximately 15,000 ha) that were destroyed by a hurricane in 2002. It should be underlined as well that the new and modern boilers minimized the emission of carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, ash and nitrogen oxides.
Why is it a „Best practice”?The biomass heating plant replaced old coal sources of heat and hot water. The town of Pisz is situated in Mazury region called the „green lungs” of Poland, which is a very attractive region for active and summer leisure. The new modern equipment of the heating plant helped to reduce air immission through the minimization of fly ashes, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. The emission of sulphur dioxide is also reduced due to the replacement of coal by wood, which contains much less of this element. It is very important that part of the wood utilised at the beginning of the operation was waste wood from the Pisz and Borecka
forests (approximately 15,000 ha) which were destroyed by a hurricane in 2002.
