New initiative for Biomass resources in the ecoEnergyland – Güssing, Austria
Project partner European Center for Renewable Energy Güssing (EEE) is working on a Master plan (Renewable strategy planning – RESP) for its COACH BioEenergy project region, the ecoEnergyland. The initiative ecoEnergyland itself is a co-operation between 14 communities of the Güssing district as well as the EEE itself with the goal to increase the use of renewables as much as possible.
One important results of the RESP is the fact that theoretically enough biomass will be available in the region of Güssing but technically only a very limited amount will be for disposal. One of the main reasons is the very small structured forests and fields and the increasing competing uses on the market.
In the area of the ecoEnergyland different renewable energy plants had been developed during the last years. The resources for the production of heat and electricity had been coming mainly from the periphery region. But the history has shown that for further developments a new and additional management for all kind of feedstocks has to be founded. Especially to close regional chains the so called “feedstock association” should be developed during the next months which is coordinating the regional resources from the community as well as from its inhabitants. The association is a co-operation between the communities of the ecoEnergyland which are willing to focus on unused feedstocks, like cut grass from public land as well as from rural roads and biomass from watersides. First calculations have been shown, that the potential is quite high and can be an alternative to convential feedstocks. Additionally also the cultivation of short rotation plants should be encouraged by the initiative. The use of wood from municipal and private forests should be also a topic within the association.
With the help of the regional feedstock association the logistic chains for energy plants should be re-organized and simplified and lead to an increased production of renewable energies in the ecoEnergyland.
