Biomass League to start in Hungary
The Renewable Energy Champions League is a European competition for municipalities to raise the utilisation of renewables. It is a network of nationally launched RES leagues, which aim at creating a positive renewable energy competition between European cities, towns and villages. The RES Champions League started in 2009 in the sectors solar (photovoltaic and thermal) and wood energy, with the participation of 7 countries.
Leagues have already been established in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Italy, France, Germany, Hungary and Poland. Energia Klub leads the project in Hungary and started with organising the Solar Energy League (Napkorona Bajnokság). The cities compete on installed power (or area) per inhabitant in three divisions of settlements: small, medium and large cities and towns.
Parallel to the national leagues European champions have been selected by a Jury composed of partners of the action (energy experts, environmental protection NGOs, municipalities network, specialized journalists) on the ground of quantitative criteria (installed power in renewable energy) and qualitative criteria (personal implication of elected persons, territorial dynamic).
In November 2010 also the biomass league starts in Hungary. Though biomass has taken a leading role among renewables in Hungary, its utilisation is not carried out in a sustainable way. After defining the sustainability criteria, Energia Klub will collect good examples for decentralised biomass utilisation. Also detailed technical descriptions will be published of some of the best utilisations of biomass. The first technical workshop of the Biomass League for experts and municipalities will be held in November 2010 together with the Coach BioEnergy project.
