Experience with the production of wood energy chips and possibility for market development with the wood energy chips
Generally the value of logging residues may be less than the cost of collecting, transporting and processing it. However, thanks to advanced technology forest residues (small trees, stumps and roots) might serve as a new source for solid biofuels.
Finland and Sweden show good examples, these countries are the most effective in producing wood chips that could contribute in several countries to the objectives of the Biomass Action Plan. The right technology is a key factor; otherwise the collection of forest residues might need the investment of more money and energy than what can be gained back. Forest residues can be collected from young stands, thinning of plantations of short rotation plants and from the logging residue containing tree stumps and roots.
